On my fifth trip to India, I finally traveled outside the southeastern coastal area. The first two weeks were spent near Chennai, volunteering at Rising Star Outreach. This amazing non-profit organization is working to eradicate the scourge of leprosy – which still exists in nearly 1,000 leprosy colonies throughout India. The photos show the RSO campus and the students, who come from leprosy colonies. Mobile medical clinics go into the colonies to treat the adult patients who live there. RSO has also established micro-grants so the adults can build successful businesses to support their families, rather than beg on the streets.
I also traveled to Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi and Delhi. I’ve wanted to see the Taj Mahal ever since I was a young girl. And while it was stunningly beautiful, even if nearly completed shrouded in fog, the highlight of the tour was definitely Varanasi. The cremation ghats on the Ganges River are indescribable, so I won’t even try. I hope this video of photos will give you a small taste of Rising Star Outreach and of the incredible country of India.
