India – A Land of Contrasts

On my fifth trip to India, I finally traveled outside the southeastern coastal area. The first two weeks were spent near Chennai, volunteering at Rising Star Outreach. This amazing non-profit organization is working to eradicate the scourge of leprosy – which still exists in nearly 1,000 leprosy colonies throughout India. The photos show the RSO campus and the students, who come from leprosy colonies. Mobile medical clinics go into the colonies to treat the adult patients who live there. RSO has also established micro-grants so the adults can build successful businesses to support their families, rather than beg on the streets.

I also traveled to Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi and Delhi. I’ve wanted to see the Taj Mahal ever since I was a young girl. And while it was stunningly beautiful, even if nearly completed shrouded in fog, the highlight of the tour was definitely Varanasi. The cremation ghats on the Ganges River are indescribable, so I won’t even try. I hope this video of photos will give you a small taste of Rising Star Outreach and of the incredible country of India.

The photograph of the man in his boat on the Ganges River is phenomenal! It is alive with color. I am transported there instantly… he is showing me his trinkets! What an incredible photo. No wonder you are a member of the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame.

  2. What a wonderful, meaningful glimpse into the country that is India! Gorgeous images that truly tell a story. The kids at RSO and the people in the colonies look full of life, brimming with the best in their situations. I think the shots near the Ganges River are my favorites for sheer poetic imagery. Thanks for sharing your feelings about the significant journey you took – we are all the richer for it.
